3rd Army forward observation post
Germano-American 1st Division, September 21st, 1947
âWhat do you think, son,â said General George Patton as he handed out the set of orders to panzer commander Erich Walder. The German tank leader picked up the telegram that came from Mansteinâs field HQ. He didnât know why, but the American officer had taken a liking to him. In fact, heâd pulled some strings to get him to his unit.
And ever since, Walder had been in several discussions with the General on many matters. Especially when Manstein ordered retreats. The fiery Yankee officer didnât like it one bit but so far had listened to Erichâs advice to trust the German general. He rather enjoyed being under Pattonâs command. The man reminded him of Heinz Guderian. But he was a lot more reckless, aggressive, and bold. Being under such a commander was pure joy to a tank leader like Walder. Like many of his comrades, he felt that attack was the best of defenses. But the words on the set of orders from theater commander Von Manstein were not about the attack. They were ordered to retreat. âWhat do you mean, Herr General,â said Erich questionably. âI mean, what should we do with these orders? I've liked that Manstein fellow so far since he launched me on the attack. Now, he asks that we retire from the very ground we have just reclaimed with Germano-American blood.â
The panzer ace didnât know what to say, so he stayed silent and waited for Pattonâs next words. âWhat is your opinion on this Von Manstein fellow? He seemed smart enough to me when I met him, but it seems to me that he likes defense.â George paused for a moment. âHis operational history is full of it since 1944.â Walder decided to defend his compatriot. âWell, General, you are right; Manstein has been involved in a lot of defensive warfare since the middle of the war. But was he not the man behind the Ardennes attack, another miraculous recovery in Moscow in 1942-1943?â The American grunted. âYes. But I mean, Colonel. Do you trust his judgment? He is asking us to retire in a fighting retreat until such time he instructs us to do otherwise. I am not used to such a strategy.â
And indeed, the fiery and aggressive Allied General wasnât. His career had been made by attacks, bold advances, and storming the enemy. But he had never before faced the full power of the Red Army. Walder had and knew that the German strategic mastermind was making the right move.
âHerr General, trust me in this. If General Von Manstein thinks weâd better retreat, I say you should follow what he says. After all, he never stays on the defense and will use any opportunity to get back on the attack.â Patton grunted again. âWell. Okay, let me put it this way. Do you trust this manâs judgment?â âWith my life, Herr General.â
âOkay, son,â finally relented the fiery American. Letâs play the manâs game and see where that leads us.
